Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive, clinically proven treatment for certain sun-damaged and pre-cancerous skin conditions, including actinic keratosis and Bowen's disease, as well as some superficial non-melanoma skin cancers. Treatment is carried out in clinic and requires no incisions, and many patients also notice an improvement in overall skin texture and tone as the skin heals.

Getting started

A consultation comes first.

Every patient begins with a consultation with one of our clinicians, who will assess your skin, confirm whether PDT is the right option for you, and explain what to expect before, during and after treatment.

Why might I need PDT?

PDT is often recommended if you have areas of sun damage that may be pre-cancerous, such as actinic keratoses. These look like rough, scaly or crusty patches, often on the face, scalp or hands. Left untreated, a small number of these patches can develop into skin cancer, so treating them early is an important part of protecting your skin's long-term health.

PDT can also treat certain superficial skin cancers. It is particularly suitable if you have several patches or a wider area of sun damage, or if the area is somewhere other treatments might leave a noticeable mark. If you have noticed any new or changing patches on your skin, we recommend booking a consultation so that one of our clinicians can assess them and advise on the most suitable treatment.

What areas can be treated

PDT can treat most areas of the body, but the most common are the ones that get the most sun:

  • Face, including the forehead, cheeks, nose, temples and around the mouth
  • Scalp, especially in patients with thinning hair or baldness
  • Ears
  • Neck and décolletage (upper chest)
  • Hands and forearms
  • Lower legs, often treated for Bowen's disease and superficial basal cell carcinoma
  • Back, shoulders and trunk

How it is treated

A light-sensitive gel is applied to the affected area and absorbed by the abnormal cells. A controlled light source or natural daylight then activates the gel and targets those cells, leaving the surrounding healthy skin largely unaffected.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

01

Does PDT hurt?

Most patients feel some stinging, burning or prickling while the light is applied, usually most noticeable in the first few minutes. It is generally well tolerated, and we can use cooling methods during treatment to keep you comfortable. Any discomfort usually settles soon after the session ends.

02

What is the recovery like?

For a few days after treatment, the area will usually be red and mildly swollen, a bit like sunburn, and may then flake or crust as it heals. Most people can go back to normal activities straight away. You will need to keep the treated area out of sunlight for 48 hours. Most skin heals within one to two weeks, and your clinician will give you full aftercare advice.

03

How many treatments will I need?

Many patients need only one or two sessions, depending on the condition being treated and how your skin responds. Your clinician will review the area at a follow-up appointment and advise whether any further treatment is needed.
