Since its launch in 2015, Ultherapy has become a multi-award winning treatment, performed over 1.5 million times and endorsed by skincare clinicians, beauty bloggers and celebrities alike. Its pledge to significantly firm the skin and reduce fine lines without going under the knife sounds like an overpromise, but that’s exactly what it delivers. With treatment times as short as 30 minutes and no downtime post-procedure, it’s no surprise that it is fast becoming one of the most sought-after anti-ageing treatments.
How Does It Work?
As we age, the body’s natural supply of structural proteins (collagen and elastin) decreases, causing the skin to lose its firmness. Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, diminishing fine lines and lifting the skin. After only one treatment, sagging skin appears reduced and delicate contours are restored.
Using a handheld device, focused ultrasound energy is delivered to the dermis and SMAS layer of the skin. The energy converts to heat, creating the optimal temperature for neocollagenesis – the production of new, healthy collagen fibres. By incorporating traditional ultrasound practices, practitioners are able to view the layers of tissue that they are treating, ensuring energy is delivered to the most beneficial areas. Studies have found a 42% increase in collagen 4 weeks post-treatment and a significant increase in skin elasticity after 12 weeks.
A Closer Look At Neocollagenesis
Neocollagenesis is a natural part of the body’s repair system during which collagen production is stimulated following an inflammatory response to injury. This process may also occur when skin tissue is heated to a threshold temperature.
During treatments, skin tissue is heated to between 60 – 70℃ and thermal coagulation points are created at predetermined depths of 1.5mm, 3mm or 4.5mm. This causes contraction and degeneration of weak collagen fibres and initiates the body’s healing response. Collagen production is stimulated, resulting in improved elasticity and firmness. By delivering ultrasound energy to precise depths, neocollagenesis is activated without damaging the surface of the skin.
Is Ultherapy The Right Treatment For Me?
If you are beginning to notice mild to moderate skin laxity, such as a lowered brow, loose skin on your neck or a lined décolletage, Ultherapy is the ideal treatment for you. As collagen production is stimulated, the skin’s firmness gradually increases over time, leading to natural-looking results.
This treatment is suitable for all skin types and ages, however, if you are looking for deep wrinkle elimination and dramatic results, you may need to consider other options.
What To Expect
Ultherapy treatment is doctor led at Meyer Clinic – that means your treatment will be provided by a medical doctor and not a therapist. Before treatment, you will attend a one-to-one consultation with a medical practitioner at Meyer Clinic. This will determine whether you are a good candidate for Ultherapy and allow your practitioner to create your bespoke treatment plan.
During treatment, you may feel a warming sensation, but most clients experience minimal discomfort. Some people may experience more discomfort, and although using pain killers are advised by some clinics, at Meyer Clinic we advise to take magnesium in the form of magnesium bisglycinate before your treatment. The treatment area will likely appear red following the procedure, however, this quickly subsides. Most people are able to go back to their day-to-day activities immediately, despite the skin feeling slightly tender.
Collagen and elastin production is stimulated during treatment and structural protein fibres continue to form during the months that follow. Due to this, results improve over time, with the full effect of your treatment being seen around 3 months post-procedure.
