Meyer Clinic knows that hair loss and alopecia can have a devastating effect on women and men. Hair loss can be due to hormonal imbalance, nutritional imbalance, medical or autoimmune disease, stress or genetic reasons. Hair loss can be a slow and gradual process, hardly noticeable to others, or a more rapid process, but either way, taking a full history and conducting a physical examination is important.

Meyer Clinic’s 360 approach is valuable when a personalised treatment plan needs to be put together for hair loss including advice on scalp health and treatment where needed. We offer PRP or platelet rich plasma too, a recognised and effective treatment to manage hair loss in certain cases which is clinically proven to increase the number of hair strands and hair thickness after treatment.

Depending on the nature and history of hair loss, various investigations will be advised. Checking thyroid, iron, vitamin B12 and hormone levels, running a full blood count and potentially ESR testing (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) a very sensitive but nonspecific test for inflammation will be recommended. An increased ESR does not directly cause hair loss but can mean that the patient has underlying inflammation in the body that could be causing hair loss.

Further investigations including Trichotest a complete genetic test for hair loss may be conducted. This will support our team when personalising a patient’s treatment for hair loss. It combines the analysis of genetic variations and lifestyle factors and suggests individualised treatment options of topical or oral solutions.  The recommendations are based on population studies analysing a total of 48 genetic variations and testing is suggested to support 3 major hair loss conditions: androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium and alopecia areata.
