Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens the bones, making them fragile and more likely to break.

Bone Health

Osteoporosis develops over several years and is often diagnosed when a fall or sudden impact causes a bone to break. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.

Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the loss of old bone.

Osteoporosis affects both men and women. However, women who are pre and post menopause are at highest risk due to the sudden depletion of estrogen, the hormone linked to bone density. Medications, healthy diet and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss and strengthen already weak bones.

At Meyer Clinic, we work with many patients who are either suffering with or pre-disposed to osteoporosis. Our team can advise on diet, exercise and vitamin supplementation to help stem, manage and improve bone health.

Hormone Therapy

Hormones play a key part in the development and protection of bones and therefore treatment with hormones can be a key factor in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The hormones estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and vitamin D, play a vital part in maintaining and improving bone density. By balancing and replenishing these hormones through therapy we can work with our patients to increase bone density and help prevent or manage osteoporosis.

Nutritional Therapy

Changes to lifestyle and diet play an important role in osteoporosis prevention and treatment. Previously, it was considered a normal part of the ageing process, however, it is now understood to be both preventable and treatable. The best way to address osteoporosis is to prevent it happening altogether. Working with a professional such as our celebrity-endorsed Nutritional Therapist Dominique Ludwig can help you to make effective changes to your diet to work towards achieving optimal health.

Health Check

If you are suffering with osteoporosis or worried that it may be a condition to which you are predisposed a personalised health check up with Dr Annelize Meyer may be able to give you the help and guidance you need. These check ups give patients the time and attention to talk through worries and concerns, to help them know the landscape. It is an opportunity to work together on a plan to prevent osteoporosis or if you are already suffering with it to manage it effectively through supplements, medicine and changes to lifestyle.
